Overview

This is the mini project that I created for EDPS 900k in the Fall of 2012. It is titled “A Case Study on Math: Is There a Gender Gap?”. I also gave a presentation on the subject when the class met in December of 2012. For the project, I interviewed two math instructors as case studies for the study’s data.

Reflection

I consider this project significant and chose to include it in my portfolio because I feel that it demonstrates my skills as a qualitative researcher.  In EDPS 900K, I learned about a variety of methods for conducting qualitative research. Our final project was to conduct a study using one of the methods that we learned about.  I choose to do a case study. To write my paper, I interviewed two math teachers who both taught math at small Midwestern universities. I chose to do a case study because I felt that it was most appropriate fit for the research that I was doing.

I asked the two instructors that I interviewed to complete a questionnaire and to give me their opinions about whether or not a “Gender Gap” exists in the field of math. The conclusions that I came to based off of their answers was that a gap still exists, but it is getting smaller.

This was the first time that I had the opportunity to conduct a qualitative study. I enjoyed learning more about qualitative research and will feel more comfortable with this type of study. I found that there are limitations to doing this type of qualitative research. It is harder to apply to a larger population than quantitative research.  Qualitative studies allow you to take a closer look at the details that quantitative research leaves out. I feel that knowing about qualitative studies will help me when I am doing literature reviews in the future.

EDPS 900D Final Project

Effects of Comprehension and Background Color on Reading Speed

Introduction

This was a project that I created for a course on Survey Methods in Educational Research. I conducted a pilot study, created a survey, and wrote a paper on the Effects of Comprehension and Background Color on Reading Speed.

Reflection

I feel that this project demonstrates my research skills. The course was mainly about creating surveys that you could use to conduct research. The main project for the course was designing a study around a survey that I created using the techniques that I learned in the course. It was important to my development as a scholar because it gave me the opportunity to learn and use a research method that was new to me and that I will probably encounter again as I design and conduct research. Survey methods may sound simple, but I found that there are a lot of intricacies that I didn’t know about. I will be able to apply what I learned to future studies that I develop and when I review studies that use surveys.

Introduction

This is the final paper for an Advanced Statistics course that I took in the Spring of 2011. It does a mixed model ANOVA analysis looking how effectively two different drugs treat a blood disorder. It was a difficult project to complete and I am glad that I was able to do so performing fairly well on it.

Reflection

The paper that I wrote for this courses demonstrates my skill as a quantitative researcher and scholar. I took this course online, which is a difficult format for a course that requires using advanced mathematic skills. The instructor provided short videos covering the topics of the course. There were tests and the final project was writing the results section of a study using one of the statistical methods we used in the course. I felt like I learned a lot from this course. It was one of the most difficult ones that I took during my graduate career. I will be using the skills I learned in this course as I review studies for my dissertation. I will have a lot better understanding of the results sections of these papers as I will have a lot more knowledge of the various statistical analyses you can do.
